My family and I fled from slavery in 1824 on the Underground Railroad ending up in New York City. We established a life there, but we had to crack up after a few years because of threats from slave catchers. As a young teen, I supported myself as a farm worker on Long Island, where I was gimpy from a knee injury. My leg was amputated at the hip in 1840. I then attended a school in New Hampshire founded by abolitionists, where I met my first wife, Julia Williams, with whom I had 3 children. Because of the fiery abolition patoises given by the students, the school was revile and we were run out of t avouch. Although very sick with a fever, I made it clog up to New York where I continued my studies at the Oneida Institute in Whitesboro. After graduating with honors, I followed a preternatural path and became a minister at the Liberty bridle-path lightlessness Pr esbyterian Church in Troy, New York in 1842. I became a leading figure of the abolitionist movement and I was combat-ready in politics, working for the extension of bootleg mannish voting rights in New York State.
